Guardian Lion
Guardian Lion reinterprets the iconic Chinese "foo dog" emblem. Xie was inspired by an old photo of her mother standing next to a lone foo dog, diverging from the customary pair. Through this image, Xie investigates how ancient symbols can be reimagined within modern narratives. Her depiction of a solitary lion symbolizes the dynamics of change, growth, and the isolated journey of immigration.
This piece combines digital collage, generative AI, hand drawing, algorithmically-generated textures. The artwork's printing technique fosters a conversation between historical and current textures - incorporating gold foil as a homage to traditional Chinese artistry.
